Online Backup Services: Carbonite vs Mozy

Almost everyone have some important files on PC. That could be projects or business documents at work, or pictures of kids on home computer. Everything works fine, but in any moment bad things could happen. Your hard disk or operating system could crash, some newest computer virus could make disaster. It is possible that you accidentally delete or overwrite some important document.

Some people use external disk or copy essential data to DVDs, or use some tool like Acronis that will create backup copy on your local drive. That's ok, but what if your office is destroyed in fire or your backup drive corrupt. What if you need your files on many computers (e.g. computer at work, laptop, home computer etc.) How you will keep file versions between more than one computer and get it when you need it?

As best solution for these problems, I found online backup services. These services install small client on your computer that works in background and creates backups or synchronize files automatically with server on Internet when you computer is idle or when your schedule it. Whatever happen on your computer or office, your files are safe and you can get them on other computer by using your user name and password.

On this way you have your "working place" independent of hardware of PC, even independent of anything material. Your virtual office is any time secure and accessible from any place. Now, when I come to work in the morning, I can't forget some important file from home, even if I am still sleepy, and not less important, my wife will not kill me if family pictures are lost :).

Carbonite vs. Mozy

Two best and most popular products in online backup category are Mozy and Carbonite. They work on very similar way, you get small client application that you install. After you set it up, client is pretty invisible, works in background and you don't need to think to much about it. The main difference is that Mozy offers free online backup service up to 2GB of space for unlimited time and payed service if you need more space. Carbonite offers 15 days trial for unlimited space. So, you can try them both and see which user interface you like more.

There is significant difference between Carbonite and Mozy in pricing. Depending of how much space you need, there are different offers:

1 - You need less than 2GB of space - In this case, Mozy is probably better choice because they offer 2GB of backup storage for free. Click here to try Mozy for FREE!

2 - You need more than 2GB of space for home or business use - Except free package, Mozy offers two payed options:
MozyHome that cost $4.95 per month or $54.45 for a year for unlimited space
MozyPro for $3.95 + $0.50/GB per month. This sounds too much. Let say you have 100GB for backup. It is $53.95 per month (although MozyPro provides advanced options like backup and restore of SQL, Exchange, and file server) To obtain MozyHome or MozyPro, go to Purchase Mozy page.

On other side, Carbonite has unique offer that costs $54.95 per year or $99.95 for 2 years. Try Carbonite Online Backup FREE for 15 days and back up your irreplaceable files automatically and securely. No credit card required!

So, which is better Carbonite or Mozy?

Both Carbonite and Mozy are polished products and you'll probably be happy with any of them. The small things decide. Personally, I like Carbonite's feature to mark files in different colors, to indicate which are already backed up, or they are in progress or not backed-up at all.

Most important is that you have your images, documents, code or other files protected. Don't protect it tomorrow or next month or next year, you'll probably forget it until next hour :). Instead, protect it now. At least you can do is to protect your essential files with Mozy Free and for $0 cost for 2GB of data finally secure that most important files.
